Anne Ryan

, 1899 - 1954

Anne Ryan was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and moved to New York in 1933. She studied painting with Hans Hoffman, and later studied printmaking with Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in 1941, where she learned woodcut techniques from Louis Schanker. Ryan hand applying layers of ink to the block and hand rubbed each impression, thereby combining monoprint techniques with traditional printmaking practices.
