James Nares, has been living and working in New York since 1974. Nares studied at the Chelsea College of Art, London and then decided to relocate to New York where he attended the School of Visual Arts. He began his career in the late seventies primarily as a musician and filmmaker. He became involved with the “No Wave” scene, a New York underground scene of musicians, filmmakers, artists and performers.
Nares’s work is included in many public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, Chase Manhattan Bank, The Hood Museum, NH, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. In 2008, Anthology Film Archives hosted a complete retrospective of his films and videos. In 2013, Rizzoli published the first monograph dedicated to James Nares’s work in all media over the last four decades.
