Sean Mellyn was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1965. In 1983 he was the recipient of a William Bingham Grant, a Pemaquid Art Association Scholarship and a Boothbay Harbour Arts Council Scholarship. In 1984-1985 and 1986 he received a Fine Art Grant from Pratt Institute. Also in 1986, he received a Charles Dana Foundation Fellowship. Mellyn received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in 1987 and in 1998-1999 he was given a Fellowship in the Visual Arts in Miami, Florida from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
Mellyn created several prints at Tamarind Institute in New Mexico in 2001, including “Anonymous”, a 5-color lithograph with hand-coloring (with collaborating printer, Bill Lagattuta), “Boy with Mask”, a 4-color lithograph with 3-D nose, collaged mask (with collaborating printer, Sarah Dudley) and “Untitled”, a 4- color lithograph (with collaborating printer, Sarah Dudley).
