Li Lin Lee
Li Lin Lee was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1945 and now lives in Chicago. Lee is a self-taught painter who made his first prints in 1994. As in his paintings, Lee uses a grid format to organize his monotypes and monoprints. Onto this grid, Lee layers pictographic forms that draw the viewer into their mysterious, poetic relationships.
His personal iconography includes plant forms, symbolic figures and abstract forms evoking various emotions. Lee’s monoprints, including the “La Isla” series, have been accomplished by first printing many sheets of Thai mulberry paper with a wide variety of colors and color blends. These sheets are then cut out and assembled into elegant compositions that are then stenciled. Li Lin’s approach to printmaking is always unique and refreshing.
