Michael Heizer was born in Berkeley, California in 1944. From 1963 to 1964 he attended the San Francisco Art Institute and in 1966 he moved to New York. Two years later, he completed sculpture and ground paintings and drawings for earthwork Nine Nevada Depressions. He also participated in a sculpture annual at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Heizer’s first solo exhibition took place at the Heiner Friedrich Gallery in Munich in 1969. During the early 1970’s he completed several earthwork projects and in 1977 he completed a series of intaglio prints and lithographs at Tyler Graphics. These prints were included in the exhibitions “Art Off the Picture Press”, at the Emily Lowe Gallery at Hofstra University in New York.
From 1980 to 1983 Heizer worked on completing his Swiss Survey lithograph-screenprint series and his Montana Survey photoetching-drypoint series. In 1984 his work was included in the exhibition, “Prints From Tyler Graphics” at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Most recently, Heizer has lived and worked in New York and Hiko, Nevada.
